oh my giddy aunt! page 2

The stage descended into darkness again for a second or two, until the Doctor and Susan reappeared on stage, alongside a rather tall actor playing David Campbell. The Doctor entered the TARDIS looking somewhat remorseful, not even glancing back at Susan as if to save him from any more of the emotional pain he currently felt.

Susan ran up to the TARDIS and desperately shouted ‘Grandfather!’ as the TARDIS door shut abruptly in her face. The stage revolved to show the Doctor stood in the TARDIS interior with Susan glancing on from the right hand side of the stage.

‘Grandfather, what are you doing?’ cried Susan, tapping anxiously at the door.

‘I want you to belong somewhere, to have roots of your own. With David, you’ll be able to find those roots and live normally like any woman should do,’ replied the Doctor, a tear glistening like a raindrop in his eye.  ‘Believe me, my dear, your future lies with David, and not with a silly old buffer like me. One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye, Susan, goodbye, my dear,’

As if to emphasise the point, the Doctor began to sing:

I'm nothing special, in fact I'm a bit of a bore
If I tell a joke, you've probably heard it before
But you have a boyfriend, a wonderful thing
'cause he will care whenever you feel too ill
I'm so grateful and proud
All I want is to let you live here now

So I say
Thank you for being my companion, the adventures we’ve been having
Thanks for all the joy you’ve been bringing
How can I live without you, I ask in all honesty
But what would your life be?
With an old man like me?

So I say thank you for being my companion
For being there for me
Mother said I was trouble before I could run
She says I began to interfere before I could travel
And I've often wondered, how did it all start?
When did I find out that nothing can be fun
Like travelling around the universe can?
Well, whenever it was, I became a man

So I say
Thank you for being my companion, the adventures we’ve been having
Thanks for all the joy you’ve been bringing
How can I live without you, I ask in all honesty
But what would your life be?
With an old man like me?

So I say thank you for being my companion
For being there for me
I've been so lucky, I am the man with a wonderful granddaughter
I wanna shout it out to everybody
What a joy, what an adventure, what a life!

So I say
Thank you for being my companion, the adventures we’ve been having
Thanks for all the joy you’ve been bringing
How can I live without you, I ask in all honesty
But what would your life be?
With an old man like me?          (3)

‘Come on, Susan,’ said David gently, steering Susan away.

River walked back on stage again, watching as Susan walked away.

‘What the Doctor didn’t realize was he was going to get a love life too. But that’s a spoiler for now. And I mean that in both ways, sweeties,’ said River. ‘As time went by, the Doctor found more companions; companions, who were unaware of the death and destruction awaiting them. However, in most cases, for the Doctor it felt like they left as soon as they arrived. By the time he arrived on his last adventure in this incarnation, he was travelling with Londoners Ben and Polly and his body was beginning to tire,’

Two actors playing Ben and Polly rushed on stage and kneeled by the Doctor’s side as the stage lights began to flicker frantically. The lights stopped flickering as a man playing the 2nd Doctor appeared on stage.

‘Wait a minute. You’re not the Doctor. Is he, Polly?’ exclaimed Ben, confused.

Polly shrugged. ‘Well, he certainly isn’t the Doctor we know.  But we’ve seen a lot of weird things happen. Is it really that impossible for this man to be able to change his face?’

‘I suppose not,’ he said unconvincingly.

Polly followed this with a song, which she sang directly to the new Doctor laying on the floor:

Now and then I think of when you looked old
Like when you said to wrap up warm and seemed so weak you could die
Told myself that you were alright for now
But felt so unconvinced in my belief
But that was desperation and it's an ache from not so long ago

You can get addicted to a certain kind of man
Like determination that there’s no end, not always an end
So when we saw that you did not make sense
Well we decided that this cannot make sense
But I'll admit that I am glad you’re not dead

But you didn't have to change without warning
Act like nothing was going to happen so that we won’t know
And I don't even think I have any trust
But you treat me like an equal and that feels so good
No you didn't have to like me so much
Care for your friends like you do but now you’ve changed your face
I guess that I can’t trust you though
Now you're just the Doctor that I used to know
Now you're just the Doctor that I used to know
Now you're just the Doctor that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the adventures we enjoyed with each other
But then you changed as if it was always something that you’d done
But I don't wanna live that way
Unable to trust every word you say
You said that you were wearing thin
And I wouldn't catch you having faith in a Polly that you used to know

But you didn't have to change without warning
Act like nothing was going to happen so that we won’t know
And I don't even think I have any trust
But you treat me like an equal and that feels so good
No you didn't have to like me so much
Care for your friends like you do but now you’ve changed your face
I guess that I can’t trust you though
Now you're just the Doctor that I used to know

Doctor
I used to know
Doctor
Now you're just the Doctor that I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know
I used to know
Doctor          (4)

Ben jumped as the Doctor sat up and said in response ‘Oh my giddy aunt! “Doctor that I used to know?” What kind of song is that?’
